Going to the pub is a fun and sociable experience for many of us. Our Scotia Heights care home in Stoke-on-Trent has opened the ‘Six Towns Tavern’ during lockdown so that residents can enjoy a chat over a pint of beer or glass of wine.
For many people, a local pub is a home away from home where you can enjoy your favourite tipple, good food and great company.
The Six Towns Tavern was inspired by residents at Scotia Heights, who suggested turning an unused therapy room into the new social space, that’s equipped with a fully stocked bar, classic pub snacks, juke box and darts board.
The pub name, Six Towns Tavern, was chosen by the staff and residents because the home is in the potteries and has six units.
Residents can order whatever they want from the range of beers, lager, ales, cider (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), spirits, wine, soft drinks and hot drinks available.
The pub also serves snacks including pub classics pork scratchings and scampi fries.
Currently, the Six Towns Tavern is open all afternoon and residents can choose to have their lunch or evening meal in the pub if they wish.
The pub is a real hit with residents and colleagues alike, and the Activities Team at Scotia Heights have grand plans for the tavern in the future.
They’ve already started a ladies afternoon and pamper morning in the pub, and hope to welcome a pub singer and host quiz nights when visitors are allowed back into our homes.
Resident, Andy, has lived at Scotia Heights for six years and has been enjoying the new addition to the home – he shared: “The pub is amazing and the atmosphere is good. I love to sing and I can go on karaoke in the pub - the pub gets people singing.”
The Activities Team at Scotia Heights added: “During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many of our residents have missed going out into the local community and socialising with family and friends – so the pub is a great way to bring this interaction and fun into our home. We’re all very proud of the pub and everyone’s loved going – all round, it’s been a big hit.”
