Congratulations to our Great British Care Awards regional winners

The Great British Care Awards are a celebration of excellence across the care sector. They pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work.

This year, 27 colleagues from across our care homes were selected as finalists in the regional awards, of whom seven were crowned the regional winner of their category.

Congratulations to our regional winners.

 

Claire Bell – Unit Manager (RGN) at

Claire won the Social Care Nurse Award for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The judges said: “Claire had a clear passion for the care industry and helping individuals with complex needs. Claire was able to explain what skills are important for her role as a Nurse and Unit Manager, and highlighted that training is important delivering person-centred and high-quality care for the service users.”

 

The Life Skills Team at

The Life Skills Team at Dearnevale won the Care Home Activity Award for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The judges said: “A great interview – the team have really maximised what they can offer within the care home, whether it be in the kitchen, on zoom calls to keep in touch with family or in house pub quizzes with all the care homes involved. What a way to create an Exemplar community! Well done Dearnevale!”

 

Megan Jackson – Senior Health Care Assistant at Marmaduke care home in Hull

Megan won the Care Home Worker Award for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The judges said: “Since joining Marmaduke earlier this year Megan has gone from new to social care to Senior Health Care Assistant. She tackles the work day with a calm approach and a clear passion and dedication to her role.”

 

Sharon Moore – Cook at Fairburn Mews care home in Castleford

Sharon won the Care Home Cook Award for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The judges said: “I would like to live in the care home where Sharon is in charge of the food. Sharon understands healthy eating but recognises that food may be the only thing in their lives that residents can control and will cook whatever is requested.”

 

Violet Hicks – Maintenance Worker at Ribble View care home in Preston

Violet won the Ancillary Worker Award for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The judges said: “Violet goes the extra mile for the residents needs she highlights the importance of inclusion and decision making she provides choice and has the ability to make resident feel like an individual providing a positive impact in people’s lives.”

 

Ross Baxter – Head Chef at Tyne Grange care home in Newcastle upon Tyne

Ross won the Care Home Cook Award for the North East region. The judges said: “Ross is using his Michelin star experience to great effect, creating a high quality, individualised approach to providing good nutritious meals for all. The order ‘as and when’ system means individuals can eat what they want, when they want, without detriment to their health and wellbeing. This means residents have the choice we have at home, with a varied, healthy and good quality menu.”

 

Luke Turton – Health Care Assistant at Pathways learning disability service in Sutton-in-Ashfield

Luke won the Care Home Worker Award for the East Midlands region. His Manager shared: “Luke is an inspiring and dedicated Health Care Assistant. Before starting at Pathways, he’d never worked in care before – but since joining the team, he has excelled! He puts our residents at the heart of everything that he does and is an asset to Pathways. Luke is a keyworker for one of our residents and has helped him to learn sign language, so that he can communicate his basic daily needs. Well done Luke, you thoroughly deserve this award.”

We’d also like to congratulate two colleagues who were highly commended in their category.

 

Helen McGowan, Home Manager at Dearnevale care home in Grimethorpe was highly commended in the Care Home Registered Manager Award for Yorkshire and Humber.

The judges noted: A caring manager. Helen’s enthusiasm and commitment to providing not only a fantastic service for her residents but also supporting colleagues with their development and is passionate in the whole care home unit constantly improving and being the best.

 

Pam Hicken, Physiotherapist at Ribble View care home in Preston was highly commended in the Care Innovator Award.

The judges shared: Pamela has revolutionised patient care within her service, with the successful introduction of virtual reality therapies. This innovative approach to the use of digital technology has played a fundamental role in reducing pain and anxiety and producing exceptional positive outcomes for those within her care.
