Whether you’re looking for a fresh start or are interested in learning more about the role of a Domestic Assistant in a care home, you’re in the right place.

What is a Domestic Assistant?

A Domestic Assistant is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards within our homes.

This includes ensuring that all living spaces, common areas and shared spaces are kept clean, safe and comfortable for both the people we support and staff members.

It’s important that our Domestic Assistants have a level of care and understanding for those we support, and are comfortable communicating with everyone who lives, works and visits the home.

What are the responsibilities of a Domestic Assistant in a care home?

As a domestic assistant in a care home, you’ll use your attention to detail to ensure that our home is clean, inviting and welcoming.

You’ll carry out daily and weekly cleaning routines including dusting, mopping, polishing and vacuuming.

It’ll be your responsibility to ensure that all communal areas such as dining rooms, lounges and lavatories are kept to a high standard, and comply with infection control guidelines.

You may also be required to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene standards in our resident’s rooms, whilst making sure to respect the privacy and individual needs of everyone we support. It’ll be your job to ensure that toiletries, soaps and towels are consistently stocked, and to maintain our inventory of cleaning and hygiene supplies.

What skills and qualifications should a Domestic Assistant have if they want to work in an Exemplar Health Care home?

There are a number of skills required to work as a domestic assistant in an Exemplar Health Care home:

Attention to detail

It’s important that a domestic assistant has a great attention to detail. Being meticulous and thorough in cleaning tasks to ensure that all areas are properly cleaned, sanitised and free from potential hazards is extremely important.

Cleaning techniques

A good understanding of proper cleaning techniques, and the different cleaning agents and equipment which you’ll use is hugely beneficial.

Empathy and compassion

You’ll regularly be in contact with the people we support, visitors and other members of staff, and so compassion, care and understanding is a key attribute. You’ll need to be able to understand instructions clearly, report issues, and maintain a professional and courteous demeanour.

Time management
