Woolston House is a new specialist care home in Woolston, Warrington, opening in early 2023.

Once completed, Woolston House will care for 40 adults living with a range of complex and high acuity needs arising from brain injury and stroke, mental ill-health, neuro disability, and physical disability and complex dementia.

The newly refurbished home, located on Long Barn Lane, will have 40 large bedrooms - each with an en-suite wet room - spread over four units, large communal living spaces, an activities hub, sensory bathrooms and a large accessible garden. The home is close to local amenities and transport links so people can maintain their community connections.

Woolston House will bring over 150 jobs to the local area in a range of roles including Health Care Assistants, Registered Nurses, Senior Nurses and support staff such as Maintenance, Kitchen and Housekeeping.

In this blog, we talk to Lindsay Abraham, the Home Manager of Woolston House, about why she joined Exemplar Health Care and her hopes for the first six months at Woolston House.

1. What drew you to Exemplar Health Care in the first instance?

From the offset I’ve been impressed with Exemplar Health Care in every way. I researched the company and clearly saw a company providing high quality, person-centred care. A company with values that are different, relevant and refreshing! A company that values and invests in staff and offers progressive career pathways from the start of employment.

I love my role and I'm excited to see what we can achieve at Woolston House. I'm looking forward to developing this new service and ensuring that adults living with complex needs in the Warrington area can receive the right care and live fulfilling lives.

2. What do you think sets Woolston House apart from other care homes?

Woolston House will support adults living with complex needs who require intensive support, providing a homely and supportive environment.

We’ll have an experienced and trained team which includes Health Care Assistants, Registered Nurses, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist.

The home will provide high staffing levels of up to five Health Care Assistants and one or two Registered Nurses on each ten-bed unit, enabling us to support those who have complex care and health needs.

We’ll be an innovative, passionate and motivated team providing excellent standards of care for our service users and a positive experience for their families.

3. Tell us about some of the specialist facilities at Woolston House

Woolston House will have an activities hub, sensory room and sensory garden, which are designed to be accessible for all residents to encourage socialising.

Other facilities at the home include a café and salon, providing excellent resources for residents to run the café or enjoy a pamper.

Our in-house Therapy Team will use innovative technology including DR.VR (virtual reality equipment) to help people to manage their pain/anxiety and encourage relaxation.

All facilities at Woolston House are designed to enable high standards of care and treatment.

4. What do you think people will value the most about living at Woolston House?

Residents at Woolston House will value the access to an experienced multi-disciplinary team that will enable high standards of care provision with access to engaging and innovative activities.

The home will also create a Service User Ambassador role, to assist the team with the ongoing development of the service and ensure that our service users are at the heart of everything we do.

The Exemplar Health Care values of fun, integrity, responsive, success and team work will be our key ethos at Woolston House, with an emphasis on 'fun' for everyone through activities, engagement and involvement.

5. What are you most excited about once Woolston House opens?

I'm most excited to be part of this amazing new service and see the development of a new team, as well as welcoming our first residents and seeing them settle into their new home.

I'm also looking forward to facilitating an excellent induction programme to equip the team with the specialist skills required for safe and effective care provision.

My goal is to create a successful home that provides outstanding care!
