Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is ‘it’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace’, something we’re a proud champion of at Exemplar Health Care.
Why is it important to prioritise mental health in the workplace?
Prioritising mental health in the workplace is important in any sector, especially the care sector.
We work each day to make every day better for those we support, and although extremely rewarding, at times this can be tough.
In order to provide the best possible care, it’s essential our own mental health is supported and protected.
A focus on a supported mental health in the workplace will also introduce positive habits that can be used in day-to-day life.
How can you prioritise your mental health at work?
It’s important to remember mental health is everyone’s responsibility. You, your management team and the organisation you work in all have to work in harmony to support good mental health and wellbeing.
It’s time to talk
It’s said often, however the first step in prioritising mental health is to talk about it.
It’s easy to ignore feelings of worry, anxiety or stress.
You’re busy at work, have a deadline that needs meeting, need to check in with a colleague… there’s always something. Addressing your feelings as you feel them, or talking to someone if you feel down, can often provide an instant moment of relief, and although it may not solve everything, it’s a good first step.
Switch off outside of work
We know it can be difficult to switch off outside of work, however it’s important to do so.
Down time allows you to create a healthy balance between your personal and professional life, and take time to rest and recharge.
Talking to family and friends, taking part in a hobby or getting creative are great ways to help you switch off.
Understand your mental health and wellbeing
When it comes to supporting or improving mental health, remember there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach!
Everyone experiences mental health in their own unique way, meaning triggers and solutions are also unique.
Taking time to reflect on your mental health allows you to tune into your own needs and create plans, both proactive and reactive, to support your mental health.
What do we do at Exemplar Health Care to support colleague mental health?
We’re proud to be an employer that prioritises colleague mental health and wellbeing.
We promote open and honest conversations
Our first piece of advice was to talk. A common barrier to this in the workplace is colleagues not feeling comfortable having conversations.
We encourage conversations about mental health, without fear of judgement, or repercussions.
We have designated Mental Health First Aiders
Having first aiders trained in physical ailments is a requirement of most organisations, so why not have this practise for our mental health?
We’re proud to have over 70 Mental Health First Aiders across all of our homes and Central Support Services.
Our Mental Health First Aiders listen to colleagues, share relevant information and signpost them to other services that can help.
Online wellbeing centre and employee assistance programme
Our online wellbeing centre allows colleagues to access education, support and other tools on how to live a healthier and happier life.
Counsellors and advisors are on-hand 24/7, 365 days a year, for immediate telephone support as part of our employee assistance programme. This programme also offers free counselling sessions.
Our mental health and wellbeing matters. We’re proud to support World Mental Health Day today, and every day.
