Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work as a Health Care Assistant? 

It’s a role that’s at the heart of the health and social care sector, however often people are unsure what the role is. 
 

A Health Care Assistant supports people with all aspects of their day-to-day living.

This might include supporting someone to get dressed in the morning, eat their meals, socialise with family and friends, take up new hobbies and access education or work.

Health Care Assistants can work in a residential care home, in people’s own homes or in the community.
 

What is the day to day like as a Health Care Assistant?

As a Health Care Assistant your role will be rewarding, helping people in many aspects of their life. Roles may vary, however at Exemplar Health Care, a Health Care Assistant role will include:

  • encouraging people to take part in social activities – helping people lead enjoyable social lives is a crucial part of providing holistic care

  • supporting people with their personal care – you’ll make sure people look and feel their best by supporting with washing, dressing and doing their hair for example

  • working as a team – to make sure peoples needs are met you’ll work as part of a wide team, both internally and externally

  • assisting people at mealtimes – no matter people’s needs, you’ll ensure mealtimes are enjoyable, and people stay healthy with a balanced and nutritious diet

  • providing companionship – you’ll treat people with dignity and compassion, offering friendly company

  • completing and maintaining care records – to ensure high-quality, consistent care, you’ll keep records up-to-date on a daily basis.
     

What skills and qualifications do you need to be a Health Care Assistant?

While qualifications can be beneficial, the most important skills a Health Care Assistant must demonstrate is care and patience.


Some other skills include:

 

  • excellent communication skills

  • patience and the ability to remain calm

  • great team work.
