After a life-changing brain injury, Neil never thought he’d box again - but with support from the team at Yarningdale, he’s back in the gym and stronger than ever. His passion has not only boosted his own wellbeing, but inspired others in the home to start their own fitness journeys too.
Before his accident, Neil was a regular at the gym. Boxing was his thing - especially sparring with friends. It kept him fit, focused, and full of energy.
But after a road traffic accident in 2015 left him with a traumatic brain injury, and additional health needs including epilepsy, a tracheostomy and PEG feeding, life changed in a big way.
For a while, returning to the gym seemed like a distant dream. But then Neil moved to Yarningdale, where the team saw more than his care needs - they saw his potential.
Back in the ring (with a little help)
When asked about his goals, Neil didn’t hesitate: “I’d love to box again.”
Enter Dana, one of Yarningdale’s Activities Coordinators, who knew just the place - and just the coach. She got in touch with The Lion’s Den Boxing Club, and introduced Neil to Coach Sam.

It turned out to be a perfect match.
Coach Sam brings out the best in Neil, he sets clear, achievable goals each session and Neil rises to every challenge - building both confidence and strength.
Despite only having use of one arm, Neil trains with dumbbells, medicine balls, a ski machine and weighted belts, all adapted to suit him.
With each session, his confidence has grown - along with his strength, fitness, and self-belief.
More than a workout
For Neil, these sessions are about more than physical progress. They’ve lifted his mental wellbeing, helped him lose weight, and given him a new sense of purpose.
“I feel great after my sessions, and it’s done wonders for my mental health. I’ve even lost a bit of weight,” shares Neil.
And thanks to our high staffing levels, a member of the team is always there to support him at every session, cheer him on, and help with transport and equipment - making sure it’s safe and enjoyable.

From personal goal to positive ripple effect
Neil’s boxing journey hasn’t just transformed his own life - it’s inspired others at Yarningdale, too.
After seeing his progress, Beth and Ken decided to follow his lead and start their own fitness journeys.

What began as one person’s goal has grown into something bigger - a ripple effect of confidence and motivation.
At Exemplar Health Care, we don’t just care for people’s health needs - we champion their goals, celebrate their progress, and empower them to live life on their own terms.
