Colleagues from Otterburn care home in Birmingham recently conquered the 14.5km hike up Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon in Wales, raising an impressive £1,255 for the Huntington’s Disease Association.

The challenge, held on Thursday 24 October, saw the team take on the 9-mile (14.5km) Llanberis Path to reach the summit of Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales.

Starting at sunrise, the guided hike took approximately nine hours to complete, with every team member successfully reaching the finish line.

This remarkable achievement raised vital funds for a cause close to their hearts, as Otterburn supports individuals affected by Huntington’s disease, making the charity’s work particularly meaningful to the team.

Why these donations matter

Every pound raised makes a difference.

  • £11.98 provides five interactive booklets to help young children understand the effects of Huntington’s disease on their family.

  • £55.70 enables a specialist advisor to meet someone affected by the disease, offering tailored support and guidance.

“This charity is so important to us, and we’re always eager to support them in any way we can.

“The team at Otterburn are always up for a challenge! The hike was no exception – it was tough, but we supported one another and achieved something incredible together.”

Otterburn Home Manager, Naomi Jones, shared her pride in the team’s dedication.

Committed to making a difference

This hike is one of many fundraising events by the Otterburn team for the Huntington’s Disease Association.

Earlier this year, they were named ‘Fundraising group of the year’ for their efforts during an event inspired by Patrick, a resident at Otterburn and an adrenaline enthusiast.

Determined to experience the thrill of a zip wire, the team overcame numerous obstacles to make his dream a reality.

In May 2023, Patrick and three of the home’s colleagues took on Zip World, the longest zip line in Wales, raising over £600 for the Huntington’s Disease Association.

Congratulations to the Otterburn team for their amazing achievement – both on the mountain and in their ongoing mission to make every day better for those living with Huntington’s disease.
