Exemplar Health Care has officially opened Springfield Vale, our new care home in Barnsley, which provides nursing care for adults living with complex dementia.

We designed the purpose-built home using evidence-led dementia design principles.

The result is a supportive, calm, and enabling environment where people can live with dignity, independence, and confidence.

A new dementia care home for the local community

We designed Springfield Vale to deliver high quality, person-centred care in a homely setting.

The home supports people with complex needs to live fulfilling lives close to their families and communities.

Springfield Vale forms part of our ongoing commitment to meeting the growing demand for complex care across England.

At the same time, we ensure each home reflects the needs of the people we support and the local area it serves.

“Springfield Vale reflects our commitment to investing in specialist environments that support people to live better lives.

“By working closely with dementia design specialists and listening to lived experience, we’re continuing to raise the bar for complex care across the sector.”

Ceremonial opening with the Mayor of Barnsley

To mark the official opening of Springfield Vale, we invited the Mayor of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, David James Leech, to formally declare the home open.

During the visit, the Mayor met colleagues and toured the purpose-built home before cutting the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening Springfield Vale and welcoming the new service to the local community.

The visit highlighted the importance of continued investment in high quality, community based care.

It also reinforced how people living with complex needs can access support close to home, in environments that promote independence, dignity, and wellbeing.

Designed with dementia in mind

We designed Springfield Vale in collaboration with the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling, bringing together research, innovation, and real world care expertise.

We considered every aspect of the environment to reduce anxiety, support orientation, and promote independence.

The homes design features include:

  • using colour and contrast to support clear wayfinding

  • planning lighting carefully to support circadian rhythm and sleep

  • providing multiple communal spaces that encourage choice and social connection

  • creating safe, accessible outdoor areas that promote wellbeing and purposeful activity.

Supporting people, families, and colleagues

We designed Springfield Vale not only for the people who live in our home, but also for their families and the colleagues who support them every day.

Welcoming shared spaces provide comfortable areas for visits, while enhanced staff facilities support colleague wellbeing and retention.

This holistic approach reflects our belief that well designed environments play a vital role in delivering outstanding care outcomes.

Building for the future of complex care

Springfield Vale represents a significant step forward in dementia-led care design.

It shows how research informed environments can positively shape everyday experiences for people living with complex needs.

By embedding evidence-based design into every stage of development, we continue to raise standards across the sector and invest in care environments that truly make a difference.
