What is a Care Home Maintenance Technician?

A Care Home Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring that a care home and all of its facilities are in a safe and good working order.

Care Home Maintenance Technicians play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and comfort of the people we support and colleagues.

They ensure that the home is a safe place to be through routine checks, repairs and records.

It’s important that Care Home Maintenance Technicians are good role models and can demonstrate a range of tasks including decorating, gardening and plumbing.

What skills and qualifications do you need to become a Care Home Maintenance Technician?

To be a Care Home Maintenance Technician at Exemplar Health Care, a 17th edition electrical certificate would be advantageous but isn’t necessary. If you don’t have this already, we’d like you to be willing to work towards it.

As well as this, a specific range of skills are required to ensure that you meet the person specification for this role. These skills include:

  • experience in a variety of maintenance tasks as outlined in the job description
  • knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations
  • ability to follow policies and procedures
  • competency in the use of hand tools and equipment.

In addition to this, there are certain skills that are highly desirable for carrying out your work. These skills include:

  • The ability to work under your own initiative whilst working towards demanding targets.
  • Time management and delegation skills that allow you to prioritise jobs and organise your workload.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in working with external contractors.
  • Experience advising and training others.

All of our Care Home Maintenance Technicians must be caring, sensitive and compassionate to those around you, as our aim is to make the people we support and colleagues comfortable in our care homes.

When you start, you’ll do a four day welcome induction which covers mandatory and statutory training including moving and handling, safeguarding, person-centred care and infection prevention and control.

After that, you’ll complete a role specific induction programme in your home. This induction will cover all of your responsibilities in detail.

Throughout your employment, you’ll have regular supervisions and Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) with your Manager. During your PDR, you’ll review your progress, celebrate your achievements, address any issues and identify your career aspirations.

What do Care Home Maintenance Technicians do?

You’ll make sure that your home is a safe, welcoming and pleasant place to live and work.

No two days will be the same. However, as a general guide, your responsibilities may involve the following:

  • General maintenance tasks around the home including statutory, mandatory, preventative and reactive maintenance. This can include things such as inspecting and clearing drains, replacing light fittings and PAT testing electrical equipment.
  • Maintaining health and safety standards including carrying out regular checks of the home to ensure that all work areas are safe for colleagues, service users and visitors, reporting any defects to the Home Manager immediately.
  • Undertaking training to support personal development as required for the role, such as decorating, joinery, plastering, plumbing and tiling.
  • Having a good working relationship with colleagues, service users and visitors in your home, as well as central support functions such as the Estates Team and Health and Safety Team.
